Our Programs

We Code, Too Summer academy (July 30th - august 8th)

Two week, eight day camp for 12-15 participants (Young Men and Women of Color Grades 6-12) facilitated by tech and industry professionals covering:

o   Web Development/Design and Computer Coding via HTML

o   Java Script/CSS

o   Life skills and Perseverance

·        The program provides lunch for students, a structural team competition and a field trip to local computer/software based facilities. Parents are also invited to attend a parent/student information session during the program.

·        Being that this is a eight day camp, every day the cohort will visit one local computer/software company to see what they do, how they operate, how they utilize technology/coding/programming.

·        Academy Participants will develop necessary skills, behaviors and attitudes when they have opportunities to learn how to interact effectively with other people and from other people.

·        We begin with an individual assessment to asses where the students are in their coding skills.

·        After the assessment the participants and the facilitator, along with the volunteers there to support, will collaborate on a personalized plan to guide them as they set a goal for the week.

·        This will also be used as a time period to show that the students want to participate. No camp days can be missed, and all rules and guidelines must be followed.

·        Participants will learn how to take charge of their future leadership development by:

o   Practicing self-assessment, personal reflection and self-awareness

Bi-monthly coding academy - phase 2

After the coding scholars go through the initial two-week camp, we would like to gift each of the participants with their own personal laptop. The goal would be for them to continue to practice and develop their skills. We will then meet as a cohort the 2nd Saturday of every other month to review, revise, and continue to work on our craft. Programming and coding isn’t something that you learn in one week. It requires a commitment. The laptop will allow them to practice, and the scheduled bi-monthly Saturday Academies will allow for the instructors to monitor their progress.

The goal is for June 2019 to have a 2nd cohort that can be led by the first. We want to begin the process of building a pipeline of African American and Latinx Coders. We are in this for the long haul.
