Our Programs

We Code, Too  is a program that comprises of two phases for our youth, and a Digital Skills class for adults of low income or public housing and those who are reentering our community from incarceration. Phase one consists of a two week coding camp for African American and Latinx young men and women between the grades of 6-12 from throughout the Greater Charlottesville Region to address this problem. While we currently see some computer camps in the area, the majority of them severely lack diversity in both ethnicity and philosophy. We hope to change that. We are aware that a two week academy is not going to close the digital divide, but our hope is that this effort will help move us in the right direction.

Phase One

We request that parents visit our academy throughout the week, have daily conversations about classroom projects, methods of teaching, understanding self, their challenges and appreciation for learning in this environment.

Phase Two

After the coding scholars go through the initial two-week camp, we would like to gift each of the participants with their own personal laptop. The goal would be for them to continue to practice and develop their skills. We will then meet as a cohort the 2nd Saturday of every other month to review, revise, and continue to work on our craft. Programming and coding isn’t something that you learn in one week. It requires a commitment. The laptop will allow them to practice, and the scheduled bi-monthly Saturday Academies will allow for the instructors to monitor their progress.

The goal is for June 2019 to have a 2nd cohort that can be led by the first. We want to begin the process of building a pipeline of African American and Latino Coders. We are in this for the long haul.

We hope that you will join us! Let’s Change the Narrative!

Digital Skills and Training

This fall, We Code Too will begin a new program in which we have partnered with Hack Cville and the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority to go into low income and public housing sites and host weekly “Digital Skills” classes for residents and
those who are interested. We will also conduct weekly “Digital Skills” classes for individuals who are returning to our community from incarceration to assist with their plans for reentry into our community. If interested in volunteering or assisting, please visit our "Volunteer" page.
